The House When We Started

We just got back from a really fun time at the Wiltbank Family Reunion and it was really great talking with the family and watching the kids bond with their cousins. The weather was really perfect with just a little rain every day to keep the temperature down but not so much that it ruined the day.

While chatting about the progress on the house, it was suggested that we show some pictures of the house before and then I have some updated now pictures. When we first started working on the house I did not know that I was going to be documenting the changes so I just ran through taking some pictures. They are not great (not that the newer pictures are any better - I really admire those that can take great pictures!)...

Grampy's Bedroom:
The very beginning -

The paper bag floor:

This bed used to be in Granny's room and the headboard was made by (correct me if I am wrong) Eric Madrid. Beautiful work!

Now:

Room by Grampy's Room (we now call it the Kids Room):

For a short period we tried that out as the parent's bedroom...

We removed that awkward partial wall and did some paint...

It fits much better as a kid's room though!

Removing the floor...

This was the floor under the layers of carpet and another layer of linoleum.

Granny's Bedroom:

Looks like I didn't take pictures of the whole room but there are some in the ceiling tile post...Here is the flooring as it is now. It doesn't look all that bad! There are big chunks missing though, especially in front of the entry...

Living Room:

I guess I didn't really get pictures of the floor in here from the beginning but it was a shaggy carpet.

This is a now after the carpet has been removed, the furniture rearranged, and a bit of clutter removed.

We are down to the cement floor.

Kitchen and Dining Room:

Grampy made all of these cabinets by hand. He really made things to last. These were in there so good they probably would have lasted forever!

At one point this was a window (below) before it had a bedroom on the other side. The window was then turned into a bookshelf on the dining room side. We closed that off so it is a solid wall on the dining room side and it will be a bookshelf on the other side, which is Grampy's room!

Removing the linoleum in this room was by far the hardest. This took lots of effort and even the kids helped!

After removing the cabinets and wallpaper. It is fun remodeling and still having to live there at the same time!

We are now working on replacing the plumbing since it is original. Then we can start putting it back together again. The last picture in this section is the kitchen cabinet and counters we have ready to go in!

The ceiling was really low so we removed it and we are working on ideas for when we are ready to finish. Not sure if we are going to leave it exposed or not. Once the ceiling was removed, you could really see how creative Grampy got when building this house. He used whatever he could find that would work and I really admire that determination.

Can't wait until these babies are installed!

Hallway from Kitchen to Other Rooms:

We now have a trench for the new pipes...

Storage Room behind the Hall:

The floor in this room was not that bad so we left it as is and it is currently being used for storage but eventually it might get a bed!

Back Room (we call this one the Purple Room):

I didn't take any pictures of what it looks like now because it is currently a storage room for all of the parts we have that are ready to go into the house (cabinets, chairs, tables, flooring, etc.)

Storage Room off the Purple Room:

Same thing for this room. Currently it is holding onto things but eventually it will be just storage and a chest freezer!

We did not do a garden this year but grapes, blackberries and sunflowers came back in full force!
